You may want to still elevate and ice. I am starting PWB.
My cast was removed yesterday after 6 weeks for a broken 5th metatarsal bone.
Heel pain after cast removal. Often after being in a cast the foot and ankle can lack flexibility. This lack of flexibilty will cause stress to the bottom of the foot at the plantar fascia ligament which results in heel pain. Stretching and physical therapy will help with this problem.
Ive never known anyone be pain free a week after taking their casts off. My main tip would be to follow your physios advice if they are concerned in any way they will send you straight back for another x-ray. But its perfectly normal to feel pain for up to 12 months after having the cast removed.
Now that your cast has been removed it is common to experience aching in the foot and ankle. You may feel some stiffness and in cold weather often may notice it looks a little blue in colour. Swelling may occur for several months particularly in the ankle therefore you must elevate your leg when resting above the level of your heart.
Hi as shocking as it sounds it is normal to experience swelling and pain Im 4 month on from my injury 8 weeks in a cast and Im in and out of a boot now boot mainly when I go to physiotherapy at home I dont bother I cannot fully weight bear yet due to the agony Im in but the dr said to my gp in a letter that he should begin full weight bear physiotherapist says I should be walking in 2-3 month time. Yes my heel hurt a lot in the cast and toward the end I was very fidgety. You may want to still elevate and ice.
We had similar surgery within a a few days of each other. My Dr is a bit aggressive and put me in the boot last Wed. I can take it off at night and when laying down.
I am starting PWB. The cast can cause discomfort while it is on as well as after it is removed due to inflammation and the pain can impede rest and healing. This pain can be caused by a number of reasons such as blood clots swelling or an indication of soft tissue damage.
I came out of my cast on Monday and walking on my heel is sooooo painful I am back on crutches and feel as though I have regressed. I really hope we both improve soon. Subtalar fusion following calcaneus fracture.
It is normal to experience pain stiffness and swelling of the immobilized joint that can persist for some days after cast removal not to mention skin scaling. The muscles on an immobilized leg most likely have atrophied meaning they have lost size and strength. Common causes of chronic pain after a heel fracture include damage to the soft tissue around the bone and failure of the bone to heal properly eg if the fragments are still not aligned.
So when I walk most of the pain does not come from the fracture or the surgery incision but from the Achilles being too stiff and the bruises on my foot. To remedy the stiffness of the joint I stretch it by pulling my toes towards my knee with a towel and holding it for 3 seconds. Pain and Swelling.
A small amount of pain and swelling is to be expected after foot or ankle surgery. However if the pain and swelling is significant and does not subside it could be another indication that the cast is too tight. Be sure to call your foot surgeon if your pain seems to be out of proportion with the procedure that was performed.
My DD has fractured both of her arms thankfully not at the same time and both times she was in a cast for six weeks. Two weeks doesnt seem very long for a cast. Also when DD got her casts off she was hesitant to use her arms at first which is normal.
Although swelling is common too much pressure under your cast can lead to problems. If you experience any of these symptoms set aside your ice pack and call your doctor for direction. Pain numbness or tingling in your hand of foot could be a sign that swelling is causing too much pressure inside your cast and affecting your nerves.
I was in a cast up to the top of my thigh for 4mths after I snapped my shinebone cracked my knee cap. When the cast was eventually taken off I experienced alot of pain for. It was at least a year before I could walk properly on it probably took.
For good calcaneus fracture recovery one must take considerable care of the heel bone and not place any weight on it for approximately 10 weeks after surgery. Irrespective of whether the injured foot is put in a cast or splint one must not put any weight on the foot until the bone is completely healed which takes six to eight weeks at the least or sometimes longer. Before removing the cast the doctor will examine your limb the part of your body where the cast was like your arm or leg.
The doctor may want to take an X-ray of the limb when its still in the cast and check things like your pain level. If everything seems OK the doctor or a cast technician will remove the cast with a special saw. After the cast is removed it is normal for there to be some discomfort in the bones and joints that were immobilized for the arm or leg to be smaller than the other side and for the skin to have some changes dry skin and more hair.
A few baths in warm water will soak off the dry flaky skin. Range-of-motion activities are key exercises for your ankle after the cast comes off. Movement helps decrease stiffness and also helps reduce swelling that might still occur.
Active range-of-motion exercises are typically initiated first. After the cast is removed you will progress to partial or weight bearing as tolerated and then you will start to work on regaining strength and mobility. A study published in the September 2016 issue of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery is changing the way the Jones fracture is treated as it shows that earlier weight bearing in a walking boot resulted in better bone healing than extended non.
Im 7 months past foot surgery and of the 5 fusions I had done 2 have loose screws. Rest assured I was really good as this was a revision surgery from 12 months before. After removing the cast and into the boot I used a wheelchair to get from point A to Point B.
The pain from this source is often burning or stinging. While the local anesthetic injected during the surgery can keep this pain limited for about 12 hours after surgery it eventually wears off. The use of narcotic pain medications or acetaminophen can help reduce most of this pain afterwards.
What causes burning sensation in the heel after removal of cast. My cast was removed yesterday after 6 weeks for a broken 5th metatarsal bone. My doctor said I could be full weight bearing and gave me a shoe.
